Rewind to Five

Whenever I attend a convention or my local toyshop I look around and realize that we all have something in common: We were all fortunate as kids to have grown up in the best toy culture around. Most of us remember grabbing those wrapped presents from under the tree and opening up that Mego figure, Star Wars toy, Mr. Potato Head, G.I. Joe, Etch A Sketch, Barbie, whatever it was it made us feel whole. And our parents would spend their very last dime and hunt that elusive toy, wherever that might have been, just so that they can see our smiling faces on Christmas morning.

This aint your Mama's FAO anymore!

On Thanksgiving Day The legendary toy retailer FAO Schwarz unveiled its redesigned flagship store on Fifth Avenue at 58 th Street in New York, following its October 22 reopening of FAO Schwarz’s Las Vegas Store, located within the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace. After having suffered a miserable 2003 with two bankruptcies in 11 months FAO has bounced back with its redesign look featuring over 20,000 computer –controlled colored lights, a giant dance-on piano keyboard and a classic ice cream parlor called “FAO Schweetz.” FAO Schwarz was founded by German immigrant Frederick August Otto Schwarz, who opened his first store in 1862. Since then the toy retailer has become a favorite among tourists and locals alike with its collection of toys and collectibles.

Rise of the Collector

Rise of the Collector

Collectors have been around for a long time and even stereotyped as child like, eccentric people. We are fathers, brothers, mothers, sisters, investors, admirers and just plain old fans. We all have reasons why we collect books, rocks, toys and comic books. Usually it starts off as a hobby, perhaps we collect because it reminds us of our youth, and some just do it for fun. Regardless of your reason, collecting something can be as fun as a trip to Disney World.

Zen and the Art of Collecting

An observation by Harkonen

As a long time collector and reader of message boards, I'm amused by the rantings of fellow collectors concerning our hobby. Of late most notably the Marvel Legends Toy Biz brew ha ha has been burning up the boards. Boy are people pissed.

Ahhh... Who needs a desk anyway?

Ahhh... Who needs a desk anyway?

Desks are overrated.  At least, that’s what I keep telling myself.  You see, for a while now I have wanted a proper display for my G.I. Joe figures and vehicles.  I had a few of them set up in one section of another case, but I was never really happy with it. These have always been my all-time favorite toys and I have a TON of them so I really wanted to do them justice.

My Collection room evolution!

So I had a very busy past year. I moved into a new home and finally had enough space to create the Collection room I have always dreamt about. It was a long process but needless to say I am VERY happy with the results.

1976 Mattel Toy Is An Elegant Toy From A More Civilized Age

The Wreck Of The Eagle 1

Going to the 2011 NY Comic Con was an exercise in professional nerdity – being together with 105,000 of your fellow geeks, surrounded by the hottest new toys, shows, video games, and comic artists, not to mention a fandom that has become comfortable with letting their freak flag fly, was one of the most intense experiences of my life.

But the thing that made the most impact on me was, ironically enough, an old plastic toy.

Christopher Reeve Tribute Figure

Christopher Reeve Tribute Figure

Like many other collectors and enthusiasts, I have wanted a nice, accurate Christopher Reeve Superman figure since seeing the movie for the first time in 1978. I didn't know of the Mego 12 ½" Movie tie-in doll that would have made my day back then, way before I knew how to make my own figures. It would have sufficed for a long time as I am sure it did for whoever was lucky enough to have had one.
